Electromagnetic and Mechanical Stress Analysis in an Electrical Machine for Electric Vehicle Applications
Background of thesis project
Electrical machines for traction applications are typically exposed to high dynamic loads, swift speed variations and high harmonic content originating from the electric drive. Stresses on the mechanical structure, due to electromagnetic and mechanical forces, result in noise and vibrations which need to be minimised.
Suitable background of students:
Students with electrical and/or mechanical engineering background:
one student with electromagnetic FEM simulation knowledge required, and one student with mechanical FEM simulation knowledge required. Preferably experience with electrical machines.
Description of thesis work
Goal
Develop two simulation models/environments dedicated to the electromagnetic and mechanical study of a given electrical machine for traction applications. Identify the electromagnetic and mechanical forces which produce mechanical stresses, causing noise and vibrations. Simulate and quantify their impact, and use the results to suggest solutions for minimizing the mechanical stresses.
Plan
After selecting the suitable FEM simulation software, setup the simulation models based on the provided data for the electrical machine. Perform sensitivity studies, such as the influence of harmonic content or geometric parameters on the field distribution of mechanical stresses. Investigate their impact on noise and vibration and suggest measurements to verify the simulation results.
